SUMMARY:Eucalypt Discovery Self Guided Walk - Australian National Botanic Gardens (ACT)
DESCRIPTION:Explore Australia’s iconic and dominant tree species on this fascinating one-hour self-guided walk.\nThe Australian National Botanic Gardens are open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Christmas Day. \nWind your way through the gardens and discover 21 of Australia’s iconic eucalypts on this self-guided walk which is supported by interpretation signs and a printed brochure. \nVisit the Visitor Centre while in the Gardens to pick up a flyer and map of the walk or download one here \nYou’ll learn how to distinguish the three kinds of eucalypt and find out about the variety of leaves\, fruits\, bark and more. \nEucalypts are a defining feature of much of the Australian landscape and an essential part of Australian culture. They dominate the trees of Australia and provide habitat and food for many native animals. \nOf the more than 850 eucalypt species known\, almost all are native only to Australia. Some species have a wide geographic distribution; others are extremely restricted in their natural habitat and need conservation. \nThe initiation and the refreshing of the Eucalypt Discovery Walk has been proudly supported by Eucalypt Australia. \nOur CEO Linda Baird recommends a special visit to the Eucalyptus scoparia – Wallangara White Gum – number 8 on the list – a massive example of what is normally a small to medium sized tree. \n

SUMMARY:Toolangi Forest Secondary Teacher PD Day postponed to T4 2025 (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:Postponed to T3/T4 2025 \nAs educators\, how can we address environmental topics in a way that minimises student disconnection or anxiety about these issues while motivating them to take action? Join Anne-Maree McInerney\, General Manager of Gould League and a recognised global sustainability advisor\, for a day-long exploration in the forest alongside experts in climate science\, biodiversity\, drones and water conservation. This professional development opportunity is designed to uplift and inspire teachers as they discover the economic\, social\, and long-term advantages of healthy mountain forests and their critical role in our future. \nWe will discuss the immense value of ecosystem services forests provide such as crop pollination\, water purification\, food security\, and carbon sequestration\, which collectively amount to trillions of dollars worldwide. Participants will gain insight into local wildlife adaptations\, the historical significance of ecosystem services in the Yarra Ranges catchment area\, and the effects of human activity. Our expert speakers in Climate Science and Water Services will ensure that teachers leave with crucial information that aligns with the school curriculum. This knowledge will be reinforced through an outdoor walk in previously burned forest areas and a hands-on skills session\, allowing teachers to experience first-hand what their students would encounter during an excursion. \nThis day celebrates the magnificent tall trees of the Toolangi State Forest and the river system that sustains us\, providing Melbourne’s water supply. This innovative approach to real-world learning offers a peek into the future of education\, fostering resilience\, creating jobs\, and making positive contributions to society and the environment.
