If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans to get to know eucalypts both in natural bush and in planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk for field identification of eucalypts (and possibly some other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00am to 12pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1pm to 3pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a complimentary copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. This is an invaluable resource for both beginners and more experienced bushwalkers and nature lovers. If you have a copy already that you love\, you are welcome to bring it\, and you might consider either using or gifting your new copy. \n\nOn the day you will also be able to purchase signed copies of Leon’s new book written with Fons VandenBerg “Stories Beneath our Feet – Exploring the Geology and Landscapes of Victoria and Surrounds” for $75.  This amazing publication is a 672-page book explaining the geological origins of southeastern Australia\, attractively illustrated with over 1870 high quality photos\, digital images\, maps and diagrams. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers and local community members who have supported or contributed to the establishment of the Lakeview Contemplation Garden are invited to celebrate the first anniversary of our tools getting to work. The morning is also open to all in the community who wish to attend and join in. \nLakeview Contemplation Garden is being built in a small dry park in Lakeview Drive\, Edgewater WA. Rather than have 700m2 of unused dry weedy grass the community has joined together to build a WA native plant garden with several eucalyptus trees being planted to form the future shady framework for the park. It is our hope that it will encourage the community to plant the species we have selected for flower and form. \nOur eucalypts have been chosen to ensure they fit in an urban environment\, for example Eucalyptus Caesia has been chosen for its gentle weeping habit\, beautiful bark and flowers and its smaller\, open growth\, making it perfect for a home garden. \nThe event will showcase the efforts of our volunteers\, and the growth of our plants and trees\, say thank you to our supporters and volunteers and\nprovide an opportunity for the community to get involved in painting a simple eucalyptus leaf mural on the back brick fence/wall of the garden. \nThis event will also provide an opportunity for the community to share a morning tea while walking through the different paths created in the garden and seeing the incredible growth of the WA native plants and trees since our first planting in June 2024

DESCRIPTION:This event will celebrate the launch of a new trail through the naturally occurring old-growth forest at the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden near Batemans Bay on the NSW South Coast. The trail features seven remarkable trees from six different species\, each displaying old-growth characteristics and estimated to be several centuries old. Among them is an Aboriginal scar tree\, where a section of bark was likely removed for traditional purposes\, possibly to craft a shield. \nThe trail showcases the environmental and cultural significance of old-growth eucalypt forests while featuring some of the Eurobodalla region’s largest and most iconic trees. DESCRIPTION:A gnarled old redgum stands by the creek. It has witnessed many changes since it first sprouted among the ancient basalt stones more than three centuries ago. This book is an artist’s impression of the stories it could tell; of the Wurundjeri people who followed the rhythm of the seasons to the arrival of strangers who settled and made their new home among the gumtrees. It tells of change that came as both the tree and the city continued to grow\, and the grasslands disappeared. DESCRIPTION:Explore Australia’s iconic and dominant tree species on this fascinating one-hour self-guided walk.\nThe Australian National Botanic Gardens are open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Christmas Day. \nWind your way through the gardens and discover 21 of Australia’s iconic eucalypts on this self-guided walk which is supported by interpretation signs and a printed brochure. \nVisit the Visitor Centre while in the Gardens to pick up a flyer and map of the walk or download one here \nYou’ll learn how to distinguish the three kinds of eucalypt and find out about the variety of leaves\, fruits\, bark and more. \nEucalypts are a defining feature of much of the Australian landscape and an essential part of Australian culture. They dominate the trees of Australia and provide habitat and food for many native animals. \nOf the more than 850 eucalypt species known\, almost all are native only to Australia. Some species have a wide geographic distribution; others are extremely restricted in their natural habitat and need conservation. \nThe initiation and the refreshing of the Eucalypt Discovery Walk has been proudly supported by Eucalypt Australia. \nOur CEO Linda Baird recommends a special visit to the Eucalyptus scoparia – Wallangara White Gum – number 8 on the list – a massive example of what is normally a small to medium sized tree. \n
