SUMMARY:Art of Flow Workshop: Intuitive Art inspired by the Eucalypt Leaf (Online)
DESCRIPTION: Intuitive Art inspired by the Eucalypt Leaf …by Gabbi Kitchener\nCelebrating the life-giving Eucalypt tree through art.   \nThis free online painting workshop will be streamed via Facebook Live. \nSaturday 23rd March 2024\n11am – 1pm (Sydney time\, AEDT)\nUsing whatever paint and paper you already have (with a simple suggested materials list in case). \nTo prepare for the workshop\, you will be asked to wander outdoors in parks\, gardens or the bush and collect leaves\, branches\, take photos…  sit and observe\, soak up the colours\, shapes\, smells\, feelings\, sounds of the eucalypt environment. \nThe workshop will begin with expressive painting all over the page considering the colours and all the sensations of eucalyptus. \nYou will need a sprig or 2 of eucalyptus leaves or a great view of a tree… We will be looking at the spaces between the leaves (the negative spaces) to mark out a design and block out the spaces with opaque paint. This will leave the leaves as the beautiful free and colourful layer that we started with. \nMany beginners are amazed by what they can achieve and for more experienced artists this is a fun and dynamic way to explore the skills they already have and try something new. \n\nCreate a unique & original artwork inspired by the beauty of the Eucalyptus Tree & it’s leaves. \nEveryone is welcome. \nThe session will be live-streamed in our FB group (Art of Flow at home). \nThe replay will be available if you cannot attend the live session. \n\nRegistration is essential\, please use the link: \n\nhttps://www.artofflow.art/eucalyptdayworkshop

SUMMARY:Our very own Eucalyptus yarriambiack - guided walk\, Brim (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:Yarriambiack Shire in Victoria has its very own endemic eucalypt\, the Yarriambiack Mallee-Box. It is known from only about 150 specimens just north of Brim along the Yarriambiack Creek.\nAlicia Merriam\, the Yarrilinks Landcare Facilitator will deliver a presentation about the species\, and conduct a field visit to see it in person and so you can learn its distinguishing features.  The event will  finish with a BYO picnic lunch at Brim. \nThis species was first described in 2012 by Kevin James Rule and is part of the E. odorata complex. Similar species include E. odorata\, E. wimmerensis\, and E. polybractea. Due to its limited population size and distribution\, an observed lack of seedling recruitment\, and threat exposure in the limited reserves where it grows\, Kevin Rule noted that under IUCN criteria it should be regarded as critically endangered. \nThere appears to be little awareness of this special unique species in the local community\, although many have shown a great deal of interest upon hearing about it. Yarriambiack Shire has been heavily cleared for intensive agriculture\, and native vegetation is restricted to small reserves and riparian areas along the Yarriambiack and Dunmunkle Creeks. Unique species such as this can be an iconic species to capture interest\, attention\, and provide a focus for conservation in the region. \nBookings are essential via landcare@yarrilinks.org.au \nPhoto credit Kevin Rule \nhttps://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/media/jewdmc1i/muelleria_30-2-_rule_low_res.pdf \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opera Australia - Mills' Eucalyptus - Palais Theatre\, Melbourne 16–19 October 2024
DESCRIPTION:Eucalyptus Opera\nCommissioned By Opera Australia And Victorian Opera\, after the novel “Eucalyptus” by Murray Bail\, composed by Jonathan Mills.\n \nFor more information and tickets see:\nhttps://opera.org.au/events/eucalyptus-melbourne/ \nAs per Opera Australia: \n“Stories in the trees. Weave them out of bark and leaves. \n\nThere are more than 800 species of Eucalyptus in Australia. There is only one Ellen Holland. \nEllen’s beauty is famous for miles around. Her overprotective father has created a safe place to protect her from the world: a forest of Eucalypts. \nEucalyptus australiana\, Eucalyptus marginata\, Eucalyptus maidenii … lovingly planted\, staked\, tied. \nBut is the forest a sanctuary or is Ellen imprisoned? \nEucalyptus is a new opera by Jonathan Mills\, based on Murray Bail’s beloved novel. It’s part Australian fairy tale and part musical evocation of the Australian bush. In this dappled landscape lurks both beauty and wonder. The score is mysterious and colourful\, with moments of dramatic intensity and hushed beauty. The libretto by Meredith Oakes is poetic and spare. \nEucalyptus is an ageless story of love and longing about a daughter and a father. \nUnable to bear the thought of losing Ellen\, her father announces a competition. He sets an impossible task: only a man who can name all the trees on his land may marry his daughter. \nAs suitors cross the world to try their luck\, Ellen encounters a stranger amongst her father’s trees: a storyteller with enchanting tales of faraway lands. \nRenowned Australian playwright and director Michael Gow directs this new production\, with designs by Simone Romaniuk. Desiree Frahn and Simon Meadows create the roles of Ellen and her father\, with Orchestra Victoria conducted by Tahu Matheson.”

If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans to get to know eucalypts both in natural bush and in planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk for field identification of eucalypts (and possibly some other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00am to 12pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1pm to 3pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a complimentary copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. This is an invaluable resource for both beginners and more experienced bushwalkers and nature lovers. If you have a copy already that you love\, you are welcome to bring it\, and you might consider either using or gifting your new copy. \n\nOn the day you will also be able to purchase signed copies of Leon’s new book written with Fons VandenBerg “Stories Beneath our Feet – Exploring the Geology and Landscapes of Victoria and Surrounds” for $75.  This amazing publication is a 672-page book explaining the geological origins of southeastern Australia\, attractively illustrated with over 1870 high quality photos\, digital images\, maps and diagrams. It doesn’t assume any prior geological knowledge.  For more information you can download:  SBOF flyer Jan 24 \n\nPlease come prepared for the weather and wear shoes suitable for walking some distance.  There is no toilet or water at Langwarrin. \nThis excursion is assisted by Eucalypt Australia as part of the National Eucalypt Day program. \nLeon Costermans Eucalypt Identification Field Trip \nSaturday March 22\, 2025 \n9:45am to 3:30pm \nTicket sales open Friday 7th of March at 1:00 pm. \nBook at:  https://www.trybooking.com/CZTLR \n\nPlease be considerate and only book a ticket for yourself. \n
