SUMMARY:Weaving Eucalypts Project Liz Williamson - Wangaratta Art Gallery (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:This collaborative project by weaver Liz Williamson explores local colour\, cultural connections\, and shared weaving traditions. In 2020\, Williamson began inviting colleagues in Australia and India to colour fabric with eucalyptus leaves collected locally. Once received in her studio\, Williamson wove the fabric into panels referencing the traditions of woven rag rugs.\nSince 2021\, the project has expanded to connect with more colleagues in Australia and India as well as other countries touched by the Indian Ocean – Bangladesh\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Pakistan\, Sri Lanka\, South Africa\, and Thailand. Extending from Williamson’s research into Australian natural dye plants\, the Weaving Eucalypts Project features 100 panels woven by Williamson with fabric dyed by 60 collaborators with over 50 eucalypts species identified and sourced from over 50 locations.

DESCRIPTION:Shining a Light on Australian Native Bonsai\nThe Victorian Native Bonsai Club is holding its annual exhibition of members’ Australian native bonsai trees. \nWhile the display will\, as always\, cover a wide range of Australian native species\, there will be a significant number of Eucalypts in the exhibition. While they don’t have the final list of exhibits as yet\, the club expects to have a range of species of Eucalyptus\, Corymbia and Angophora. \nThe theme for this year’s exhibition is “Shining a light on Australian native bonsai”\, and will feature a special lighting up of a number of trees in the dark of the Friday evening\, with carefully placed floodlights beneath the trees. \nThere is a special opening night on Friday\, March 15th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and a full day on March 16th from 9am to 4pm. \nAdults $7\, children under 15 are free. \n

DESCRIPTION:In this one-hour talk\, master weaver Liz Williamson will discuss the Weaving Eucalypts Project exhibition at Wangaratta Art Gallery. The project involves a community of practitioners from Australia\, New Zealand and several Indian Ocean countries – practitioners linked by an engagement with nature\, concern for sustainability and natural dyeing.\nWilliamson will briefly discuss the development of the project\, key eucalypts dye experiments in Australia\, the dissemination of eucalypts to Indian Ocean countries and the practitioners in the projects. Her talk includes the landmark research of Jean Carman\, who was the first to systematically document the colours of Australian eucalypts by testing over 450 species and publishing her findings in 1978.  \nBook your free ticket now here.

DESCRIPTION: Intuitive Art inspired by the Eucalypt Leaf …by Gabbi Kitchener\nCelebrating the life-giving Eucalypt tree through art.   \nThis free online painting workshop will be streamed via Facebook Live. \nSaturday 23rd March 2024\n11am – 1pm (Sydney time\, AEDT)\nUsing whatever paint and paper you already have (with a simple suggested materials list in case). \nTo prepare for the workshop\, you will be asked to wander outdoors in parks\, gardens or the bush and collect leaves\, branches\, take photos…  sit and observe\, soak up the colours\, shapes\, smells\, feelings\, sounds of the eucalypt environment. \nThe workshop will begin with expressive painting all over the page considering the colours and all the sensations of eucalyptus. \nYou will need a sprig or 2 of eucalyptus leaves or a great view of a tree… We will be looking at the spaces between the leaves (the negative spaces) to mark out a design and block out the spaces with opaque paint. SUMMARY:Our very own Eucalyptus yarriambiack - guided walk\, Brim (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:Yarriambiack Shire in Victoria has its very own endemic eucalypt\, the Yarriambiack Mallee-Box. It is known from only about 150 specimens just north of Brim along the Yarriambiack Creek.\nAlicia Merriam\, the Yarrilinks Landcare Facilitator will deliver a presentation about the species\, and conduct a field visit to see it in person and so you can learn its distinguishing features.  The event will  finish with a BYO picnic lunch at Brim. \nThis species was first described in 2012 by Kevin James Rule and is part of the E. odorata complex. Similar species include E. odorata\, E. wimmerensis\, and E. polybractea. Due to its limited population size and distribution\, an observed lack of seedling recruitment\, and threat exposure in the limited reserves where it grows\, Kevin Rule noted that under IUCN criteria it should be regarded as critically endangered. \nThere appears to be little awareness of this special unique species in the local community\, although many have shown a great deal of interest upon hearing about it. Yarriambiack Shire has been heavily cleared for intensive agriculture\, and native vegetation is restricted to small reserves and riparian areas along the Yarriambiack and Dunmunkle Creeks. If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans to get to know eucalypts both in natural bush and in planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk for field identification of eucalypts (and possibly some other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00am to 12pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1pm to 3pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a complimentary copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. DESCRIPTION:Explore Australia’s iconic and dominant tree species on this fascinating one-hour self-guided walk.\nThe Australian National Botanic Gardens are open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Christmas Day. \nWind your way through the gardens and discover 21 of Australia’s iconic eucalypts on this self-guided walk which is supported by interpretation signs and a printed brochure. \nVisit the Visitor Centre while in the Gardens to pick up a flyer and map of the walk or download one here \nYou’ll learn how to distinguish the three kinds of eucalypt and find out about the variety of leaves\, fruits\, bark and more. \nEucalypts are a defining feature of much of the Australian landscape and an essential part of Australian culture. They dominate the trees of Australia and provide habitat and food for many native animals. \nOf the more than 850 eucalypt species known\, almost all are native only to Australia. Some species have a wide geographic distribution; others are extremely restricted in their natural habitat and need conservation. \nThe initiation and the refreshing of the Eucalypt Discovery Walk has been proudly supported by Eucalypt Australia. \nOur CEO Linda Baird recommends a special visit to the Eucalyptus scoparia – Wallangara White Gum – number 8 on the list – a massive example of what is normally a small to medium sized tree. \n

Prizes for first second and third\n3rd category is the Weirdest/Most Unusual Leaf. Photo to be taken of leaf along with a piece of paper with their name\, date leaf found and rough location\, and submitted to an email address. Prizes for first only.
