DESCRIPTION:Join multidisciplinary artist Dean Cross and make living art that will travel beyond the gallery as part of celebrations for National Eucalypt Day. \nYou’ll be guided to shape seed balls from paper and gum tree seeds that will form part of Dean’s new commission in the upcoming exhibition Ngarn Wa’ngal: Art of the gum tree. Each ball will be dispersed back to Country after the exhibition closes and activated by rain for revegetation. \nThe day will begin with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Kim Wandin\, senior Wurundjeri artist and Elder. Dean will then share insights into the creative process behind the commission. The activity will be facilitated by Dr Katherine Horsfall\, Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne’s School of Agriculture\, Food and Ecosystem Sciences. \nAprons and gloves will be provided\, but please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans OAM to get to know eucalypts in both natural bush and planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston\, where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk to identify eucalypts (and possibly other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45 am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00 am to 12 pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00 pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45 pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1 pm to 3 pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a complimentary copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. This is an invaluable resource for both beginners and more experienced bushwalkers and nature lovers. Some of the River Red Gums are over 200 years old!! All supplies provided\, including light refreshments. DESCRIPTION:This Monday 23 March is National Eucalypt Day\, and we’re celebrating by inviting the community to discover one of Australia’s most iconic tree groups through a new Eucalypts of Port Melbourne walking map.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis new map guides residents and visitors on a short\, self‑guided walk through Port Melbourne\, highlighting a diverse range of eucalypt species growing in streets\, reserves and nature strips.  \nAlong the way\, walkers can learn how to identify eucalypts by observing their leaves\, bark\, flowers and distinctive gumnuts – and gain a deeper appreciation for the vital role these trees play in our urban forest.  \nDiscover eucalypts close to home \nEucalypts are a defining feature of Australia’s landscape\, and Port Phillip is home to an impressive variety – from smooth-barked Sydney Red Gums\, perfumed lemon-scented gums and the colourful Red Flowering Gums loved by local lorikeets.  \nThe walking map leads participants through areas including Garden City Reserve\, Barak Road and Howe Parade. There are clearly marked stops where different species can be observed. Each stop includes information about what to look for\, helping walkers build their confidence in identifying trees they may not normally notice.  \nWhether you’re a long‑time local\, a student\, or simply curious about nature\, the walk offers an easy and engaging way to connect with the natural environment.  \nWhy eucalypts matter in our city \nEucalypts play an especially important role in Port Phillip’s urban forest\, which includes all trees and vegetation across both public and private land.  \nWell adapted to Australia’s climate\, eucalypts are resilient\, fast-growing and highly effective at cooling our streets and open spaces. Their shade helps reduce urban heat\, making neighbourhoods more comfortable during warmer months. Mature eucalypts also provide essential habitat\, shelter and food for birds\, insects and other wildlife\, supporting local biodiversity.   \nFor Aboriginal people\, eucalypts have strong cultural importance. They have been used and cared for over tens of thousands of years and remain an important part of Australia’s natural and cultural landscape today. \nAustralia is home to around 1\,000 species of eucalypts – more than anywhere else on Earth. By centring eucalypt trees—the quiet giants of the landscape—as teachers\, shelters and lifelines\, the event aims to foster a deeper sense of stewardship and belonging. Through curiosity\, storytelling and hands-on experience\, Give a Hoot invites the community to not only admire these trees\, but to understand why protecting them is essential for the future of local wildlife and the identity of Bullsbrook itself. \nGive a Hoot Bullsbrook is an annual community-led environmental education event held at a community centre in Bullsbrook\, a north-eastern suburb of Perth that sits at the meeting point of urban growth and remaining bushland. This peri-urban/rural community is still\, in parts\, enveloped by significant eucalypt species including marri\, wandoo\, powderbark wandoo\, flooded gum and flowering ficifolia. These trees form the ecological backbone of the district\, yet many are being progressively removed as land is cleared for new housing estates. At the same time\, Bullsbrook is experiencing rapid social change\, with new Australians and urban-based families moving to the area seeking a “country” lifestyle—often without a full understanding of the local environment they are now part of. \nFew residents know the names of these eucalyptus species\, let alone the critical role they play in supporting wildlife\, regulating climate\, providing habitat\, and sustaining biodiversity. Give a Hoot Bullsbrook was created to gently but powerfully address this gap in knowledge. The event encourages the entire community to pause\, look at their own environmental footprint\, and reflect on how everyday choices impact the natural systems that surround them. \nThe focus will be on helping children and families understand the vital relationship between mature eucalypt trees and the animals that depend on them—particularly hollow-dependent species—while reinforcing the importance of preserving old\, mature trees alongside ongoing community tree-planting efforts that occur during the winter rainfall period. Through meaningful\, place-based learning\, Give a Hoot aims to support families to better understand\, value and care for the eucalypt species that shape the Bullsbrook landscape\, now and into the future. \nThree key eucalyptus-focused activities will feature:\n• A guided eucalypt walk exhibit designed specifically for children\, where children can see\, touch and compare local eucalypt specimens\, learning how to recognise them\, what each ones special trait is and why each matters.\n• A dedicated storytime space\, where children will be read Hollow is a Home\, paired with the presence of a live local animal species that relies on eucalypt hollows\,and a creative activity that is focussed on our local eucalypts – creating a memorable\, place-based learning experience.\n• The creation of a localised self-guided trail map highlighting nearby publicly accessible bushland and foreshore walkways\, including magnificent flooded gums and marri trees—some hundreds of years old—located on a constructed brook walkway. Although easily accessible\, this area remains largely unknown to local families. The trail map will encourage continued engagement beyond the event day\, empowering families to explore\, learn and connect with their local environment independently.

SUMMARY:Above and Below: the Calgardup Cave Tree Trail (WA)
DESCRIPTION:Visitors will participate in a self-guided walk along a 500 metre trail through the coastal woodland above Calgardup Cave\, using a laminated booklet with above and below map overlays and eucalypt identification material. The woodland features Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor)\, Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and Marri (Corymbia calophylla). \nKids will be given a tree treasure map to colour in. They can then go down into the cave to look for tree roots underground\, and try to guess which roots belong to the trees on the trail above. \nCalgardup Cave is one of a number of publicly accessible caves in the Margaret River Region. It hosts an aquatic root mat community of macrofauna\, and is listed as a Threatened Ecological Community. Trees above the cave send roots down into the underground waterway\, creating an ecosystem with a community unique to this particular cave. The aquatic root mat is endangered due to declining rainfall caused by climate change. \nParticipants will experience a deeper connection with trees in the landscape by learning how to identify them from growth habit\, leaves\, bark\, and flowers. They will go down within the heart of the forest to experience the connection between trees and groundwater first-hand\, and learn about the impacts of climate change on forests and groundwater.
