DESCRIPTION:Leaves and the spaces between…by Gabbi Lancaster\nThis free online painting workshop will be streamed via Facebook Live. \nSaturday 11th March\n11am – 1pm (Sydney time\, AEDT)\nUsing whatever paint and paper you already have (with a simple suggested materials list in case). \nTo prepare for the workshop\, you will be asked to wander outdoors in parks\, gardens or the bush and collect leaves\, branches\, take photos…  sit and observe\, soak up the colours\, shapes\, smells\, feelings\, sounds of the eucalypt environment. \nThe workshop will begin with expressive painting all over the page considering the colours and all the sensations of eucalyptus. \nYou will need a sprig or 2 of eucalyptus leaves or a great view of a tree… We will be looking at the spaces between the leaves (the negative spaces) to mark out a design and block out the spaces with opaque paint. This will leave the leaves as the beautiful free and colourful layer that we started with. \nMany beginners are amazed by what they can achieve and for more experienced artists this is a fun and dynamic way to explore the skills they already have and try something new.

If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans to get to know eucalypts both in natural bush and in planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk for field identification of eucalypts (and possibly some other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00am to 12pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1pm to 3pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. This is an invaluable resource for both beginners and more experienced bushwalkers and nature lovers. DESCRIPTION:Join author Phil Docherty and illustrator Tom Montgomery in conversation at the launch of Kimberley Eucalypts – A Guide. Australia is rich in eucalypts\, and the Kimberley hosts at least 66 species. Eucalypts of one species or another dominate the Kimberley landscape\, from the Pindan shrublands of the west to the open\, hilly savanna of the east. \nThis book fills a gap in botanical works about the Kimberley. It provides non-specialists with a straightforward guide to Kimberley eucalypts\, illustrated with photographs and drawings to help with identification. Users will appreciate the great variety of Corymbia and Eucalyptus species found in the Kimberley and will be well-equipped to become familiar with some of them. \nPhil Docherty is a local plant enthusiast from country Western Australia\, who attributes his love of native plants to the\ninfluence of his mother\, Josephine. \nKimberley Eucalypts – A Guide will be available to purchase during the event. It is also available from the EK shop. \nThis event is supported by the Shire of Broome\, the Society for Kimberley Indigenous Plants and Animals (SKIPA) and Environs Kimberley.

DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate National Eucalypt Day on March 23 with a program of events at the Gnarojin community gardens\, Hale Street\, Narrogin.\nWe are starting the day with a walk through Fox’s Lair with Doug Sawkins\, having community events at the gardens throughout the day\, a walk along the Narrogin creek line with Peter White at 5:30pm followed by a sundowner in the gardens. \nWe will have guest speakers throughout the day discussing: eucalyptus identification\, seed collection and propagation and you will be able to participate in botanical printing. \nWe will also have some of Eucalypts of Narrogin project material on show which we hope will raise awareness of the variety of eucalypts endemic to our region. \nImage courtesy of https://www.foxeslair.org/ \n  \n
