SUMMARY:Building resilience in coastal white gum habitat - Orford (Tas)
DESCRIPTION:A local community initiative\nCoastal white gum\, Eucalyptus viminalis forests are regarded as endangered habitats in Tasmania. They are also critical in supporting some of Australia’s most endangered birds including the swift parrot and the critically endangered 48-spotted pardalote\, Pardalotus quadragintus. Both these birds have unique and very specialised relationships with White Gums. It is imperative that coastal communities not only preserve their existing White Gums\, but to also ensure that there are plenty of young trees to replace those that are being lost though human encroachment and old age. \nA local Tasmania East Coast initiative being supported by the Spring Bay Mill and The Orford Community Group volunteers will aim to plant a range of young\, provenance white gums to develop new understory populations. The initial planting area will be located along the popular tourist stop of Raspins Beach Conservation Reserve\, in Orford. \nThe plantings will commemorate 2021 National Eucalypt Day. \nBook via jane.wing@bigpond.com \n

SUMMARY:Propagating the future with the rarest Tasmanian Eucalyptus. - Spring Bay Mill (Tas)
DESCRIPTION:Most people living in Tasmania would never have heard\, let alone seen the Morrisby gum\, Eucalyptus morrisbyi. It’s one of the rarest trees in the world and certainly the rarest Eucalypt in Tasmania. Growing near the state capital Hobart\, it has been in gradual decline since the first colonists arrived in Tasmania.\nThe Spring Bay Mill on Tasmania’s East Coast has a mission to care for the natural environment. Once the home of the largest Eucalypt woodchip Mill in the world\, it is now a unique environmental retreat for celebrations\, weddings\, entertainment\, and events.  Part of the Mill’s extensive landscape restoration is an initiative to establish a new colony of these wonderful small Eucalypts on site.  This will form part of the Mills new Eucalyptus refugia with 20 young Morrisby gum trees being planted during the Eucalypt Day week. \nThe plantings will commemorate 2022 National Eucalypt Day. \n  \n
