SUMMARY:Our very own Eucalyptus yarriambiack - guided walk\, Brim (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:Yarriambiack Shire in Victoria has its very own endemic eucalypt\, the Yarriambiack Mallee-Box. It is known from only about 150 specimens just north of Brim along the Yarriambiack Creek.\nAlicia Merriam\, the Yarrilinks Landcare Facilitator will deliver a presentation about the species\, and conduct a field visit to see it in person and so you can learn its distinguishing features.  The event will  finish with a BYO picnic lunch at Brim. \nThis species was first described in 2012 by Kevin James Rule and is part of the E. odorata complex. Similar species include E. odorata\, E. wimmerensis\, and E. polybractea. Due to its limited population size and distribution\, an observed lack of seedling recruitment\, and threat exposure in the limited reserves where it grows\, Kevin Rule noted that under IUCN criteria it should be regarded as critically endangered. \nThere appears to be little awareness of this special unique species in the local community\, although many have shown a great deal of interest upon hearing about it. Yarriambiack Shire has been heavily cleared for intensive agriculture\, and native vegetation is restricted to small reserves and riparian areas along the Yarriambiack and Dunmunkle Creeks. Unique species such as this can be an iconic species to capture interest\, attention\, and provide a focus for conservation in the region. \nBookings are essential via landcare@yarrilinks.org.au \nPhoto credit Kevin Rule \nhttps://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/media/jewdmc1i/muelleria_30-2-_rule_low_res.pdf \n  \n

SUMMARY:Parwan Gorge Heritage Listed Endangered Blue Box Guided Walk (Vic)
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Hopetoun Park and Parwan Gorge (FOHPAPG)\, would like to invite you to join them on an evening nature walk to celebrate National Eucalypt Day. \nCome and view our heritage listed Endangered Blue Box trees and check out our proposed planting project site (coming up in a couple of weeks). \nBring: drinking water\, mozzie repellent and hiking stick if you have one. \nRSVP:  committee@fohpapg.org.au or send us a message on our FB event here: https://www.facebook.com/FOHPAPG \nWear: Sturdy\, enclosed footwear and long pants. We’ll be walking at a slow pace\, down and up a steep embankment. (a medium grade level of fitness is required). \nPlease note: If you have limited mobility and  not sure whether or not this event is for you\, there is an option to skip the steep embankment\, to walk along the top of the escarpment and view the trees from a distance\, email or message us if you would like more information on the terrain etc. \nWe are fortunate in Hopetoun Park to have a number of these rare Werribee Blue Box trees (Eucalyptus baueriana sub species thalassina) along the river on both sides and on the escarpment slopes. This tree was only formally recognised as a distinct subspecies by the National Herbarium of Victoria in 2011. It is restricted to the Werribee River catchment around the Bacchus Marsh area\, growing close to watercourses in alluvial soils and is classified as endangered in Victoria. \nBetween April to June 2020 FOHPAPG group members measured (height\, trunk circumference\, GPS location\, tree features) and photographed several Werribee Blue Box. \nWe decided to nominate the best five single trees and a stand of trees on the Parwan side to be registered with the National Heritage Trust Australia. We recently received confirmation that three trees and the stand of trees have been accepted and registered as significant trees.  \nLittle is known of the age or history of these large Werribee Blue Box trees\, they are estimated to well exceed 100yrs of age. There is possible evidence of indigenous use\, but we would require an expert assessment to be sure. \nWe can’t wait to showcase these magnificent trees. We will also be giving away some free saplings that have been seeded from these trees.
