SUMMARY:Sketching the River Red Gum in Bundoora Homestead Park (VIC)
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Darebin U3A Outdoor Sketching Group to sketch an old River Red Gum at Bundoora Homestead Park. Located in the Bundoora Parklands adjacent to the historic Bundoora Homestead\, the tree is a remnant of the original vegetation of the Bundoora area.\nThe group will sketch many of the aspects of the rugged tree – the overall tree as well as details of its bark\, branches and foliages. Resultant images will be put together to help document\, in artistic form\, the significance of the tree and its companions across the parklands. \nAny sketchers are welcome to join.

SUMMARY:Opera Australia - Mills' Eucalyptus - Palais Theatre\, Melbourne 16–19 October 2024
DESCRIPTION:Eucalyptus Opera\nCommissioned By Opera Australia And Victorian Opera\, after the novel “Eucalyptus” by Murray Bail\, composed by Jonathan Mills.\n \nFor more information and tickets see:\nhttps://opera.org.au/events/eucalyptus-melbourne/ \nAs per Opera Australia: \n“Stories in the trees. Weave them out of bark and leaves. \n\nThere are more than 800 species of Eucalyptus in Australia. There is only one Ellen Holland. \nEllen’s beauty is famous for miles around. Her overprotective father has created a safe place to protect her from the world: a forest of Eucalypts. \nEucalyptus australiana\, Eucalyptus marginata\, Eucalyptus maidenii … lovingly planted\, staked\, tied. \nBut is the forest a sanctuary or is Ellen imprisoned? \nEucalyptus is a new opera by Jonathan Mills\, based on Murray Bail’s beloved novel. It’s part Australian fairy tale and part musical evocation of the Australian bush. In this dappled landscape lurks both beauty and wonder. The score is mysterious and colourful\, with moments of dramatic intensity and hushed beauty. The libretto by Meredith Oakes is poetic and spare. \nEucalyptus is an ageless story of love and longing about a daughter and a father. \nUnable to bear the thought of losing Ellen\, her father announces a competition. He sets an impossible task: only a man who can name all the trees on his land may marry his daughter. \nAs suitors cross the world to try their luck\, Ellen encounters a stranger amongst her father’s trees: a storyteller with enchanting tales of faraway lands. \nRenowned Australian playwright and director Michael Gow directs this new production\, with designs by Simone Romaniuk. Desiree Frahn and Simon Meadows create the roles of Ellen and her father\, with Orchestra Victoria conducted by Tahu Matheson.”
