A local community initiative
Coastal white gum, Eucalyptus viminalis forests are regarded as endangered habitats in Tasmania. They are also critical in supporting some of Australia’s most endangered birds including the swift parrot and the critically endangered 48-spotted pardalote, Pardalotus quadragintus. Both these birds have unique and very specialised relationships with White Gums. It is imperative that coastal communities not only preserve their existing White Gums, but to also ensure that there are plenty of young trees to replace those that are being lost though human encroachment and old age.
A local Tasmania East Coast initiative being supported by the Spring Bay Mill and The Orford Community Group volunteers will aim to plant a range of young, provenance white gums to develop new understory populations. The initial planting area will be located along the popular tourist stop of Raspins Beach Conservation Reserve, in Orford.
The plantings will commemorate 2021 National Eucalypt Day.
