SUMMARY:Finding Our Local Eucalypts: Stories Written in the Landscape (WA)
DESCRIPTION:Landcare SJ invites community members\, landholders\, artists\, storytellers\, and nature lovers to take part in a creative\, participatory exploration of two rare local eucalypts: Eucalyptus marginata subsp. elegantella and Eucalyptus mundijongensis. \nThis experience blends citizen science\, cultural storytelling\, and emotional connection to place\, transforming the act of finding a tree into a deeper encounter with Country\, history\, and identity. \nWhy These Trees Matter \nThese eucalypts are deeply embedded in the landscape between Perth\, Serpentine\, and the southern Swan Coastal Plain. \nE. marginata subsp. elegantella is a restricted form of Jarrah found nowhere else. \nE. mundijongensis is locally endemic\, shaped by soil\, fire\, and time. \nTheir rarity makes every confirmed record an act of care for the future. \nThe Experience \nParticipants are invited to walk\, observe\, listen\, and document. \nThe event includes: \nGuided bush walks and self-led explorations \nHands-on identification workshops \nIndigenous perspectives\, acknowledging eucalypts as part of living Country\, including their cultural uses\, meanings\, and relationships \nReflections on how eucalypts shape Australian identity\, from ancient knowledge systems to migrant experiences of learning a new landscape \nParticipants may engage through: \nPhotography and mapping \nSketching\, journaling\, or sound recording \nShort creative reflections (words\, images\, or voice) \nFind a Tree – Receive a Reward \nTo encourage discovery\, Landcare SJ is offering rewards for verified records (unknown) of either species within the Serpentine–Jarrahdale area. \nTo participate: \nSubmit clear photographs \nProvide accurate location details \nShare any local\, cultural\, or personal knowledge connected to the site \nAll records will be verified by experienced botanists or project partners. Seed collection will only occur under appropriate permits and ethical guidelines. \nWho This Is For \nYounger and older community members \nLandholders and gardeners \nArtists\, photographers\, and storytellers \nNature lovers and adventure seekers \nPeople curious about the land they live on—whether lifelong locals or newcomers

DESCRIPTION:Explore Australia’s iconic and dominant tree species on this fascinating one-hour self-guided walk.\nThe Australian National Botanic Gardens are open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Christmas Day. \nWind your way through the gardens and discover 21 of Australia’s iconic eucalypts on this self-guided walk which is supported by interpretation signs and a printed brochure. \nVisit the Visitor Centre while in the Gardens to pick up a flyer and map of the walk or download one here \nYou’ll learn how to distinguish the three kinds of eucalypt and find out about the variety of leaves\, fruits\, bark and more. \nEucalypts are a defining feature of much of the Australian landscape and an essential part of Australian culture. They dominate the trees of Australia and provide habitat and food for many native animals. \nOf the more than 850 eucalypt species known\, almost all are native only to Australia. Some species have a wide geographic distribution; others are extremely restricted in their natural habitat and need conservation. \nThe initiation and the refreshing of the Eucalypt Discovery Walk has been proudly supported by Eucalypt Australia. \nOur CEO Linda Baird recommends a special visit to the Eucalyptus scoparia – Wallangara White Gum – number 8 on the list – a massive example of what is normally a small to medium sized tree. \n
