DESCRIPTION:Ian Roberts will be leading a morning walk of this “plantation”on Sun 22nd of Mar. Bring hat\, sunscreen\, walking shoes and water. The Walk is flat and 4.4kms return\, although walkers can return at any time. \nWalkers to meet in the carpark between Blyth Cinema (15 Moore St Blyth) & Blyth Town Hall from 9.30am\, with the walk to commence at 10.30am from the beginning of the walk. Earlier arrivals can have a coffee and snack and chat at either the “On The Plains Caf” or Blyth Cinema\, & then we move off to the walk at 10.30am. If so\, this is a unique opportunity to take a guided walk with renowned botanist/geologist Leon Costermans OAM to get to know eucalypts in both natural bush and planted situations. \nThe first location will be the George Pentland Botanic Gardens at Frankston\, where Leon will facilitate practice in observing and identifying eucalypts using his iconic pocket book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. \nAfter a BYO lunch at the gardens\, the group will drive to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (about 5 km) for a gentle bushwalk to identify eucalypts (and possibly other plants) in their natural environment. This 214-hectare reserve is recognised as an outstanding area for conservation of indigenous flora and fauna; it also has a very significant military history. \nSchedule: \nMeet at 9:45 am just inside the Gardens gate at the corner of Foot St and Williams St\, Frankston (Melway map 100A: H13).  Arrive in good time to secure parking in the east end of Williams St. \n10:00 am to 12 pm: Gardens walk and identification practice.\n12:00 pm (approx.) Have BYO picnic lunch & drinks at the George Pentland Botanic Gardens (there is a picnic area and shelter\, but we will have to ‘share’ it with other visitors).\n12:45 pm (approx.): Leave for Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve\, to meet in the car park in McClelland Drive (Melway 103:C10).\n1 pm to 3 pm: Drive and walk to identify eucalypts and other plants within the reserve. \nNote that this session is intended as an introduction to eucalypt identification\, though there will be some challenges for those with some experience. \nThe $15 cost of the ticket includes a complimentary copy of Leon’s book ‘Trees of Victoria and Adjoining Areas’. This is an invaluable resource for both beginners and more experienced bushwalkers and nature lovers. Some of the River Red Gums are over 200 years old!! All supplies provided\, including light refreshments. Come along and enjoy all that nature is offering. \nFor those new to nature sketching / journaling – come along and learn some techniques in a friendly relaxed session\, with all supplies provided. A range of inclusive\, family-friendly activities is planned\, designed to attract and engage a broad audience\, which will draw on our existing infrastructure: accessible paths\, imaginative resting places and interpretative signage. \nPlanned activities include:\n• Guided walks through the Eucalypt Lawn/Arboretum and bordering bushland\, exploring habitat requirements\, species distribution\, and ecological relationships between eucalypts\, associated flora\, fauna and fungi.\n• Children’s Storytime\, featuring books focused on gum trees and the animals they support.\n• Gum Leaf Thoughts\, an interactive activity inviting participants to write a short reflection responding to the theme “Our Eucalypt Home.” Collected leaves will be displayed and documented as a community engagement outcome.\n• Community barbecue\, hosted by the Friends of ERBG at the Arboretum gazebo as a fundraising and community-building activity.
