SUMMARY:Hollow Havens: Protecting Eucalypt Homes for Wildlife (Qld)
DESCRIPTION:Our event\, ‘Hollow Havens: Protecting Eucalypt Homes for Wildlife’\, will educate the community about the importance of tree hollows in eucalypts\, their role in sustaining gliders and other hollow-dependent species\, and the conservation challenges they face. \nThis event will include a talk on eucalypt hollows and their significance\, followed by a hands-on possum or glider/small parrot box-making workshop. This hands-on component of the event will provide participants with a tangible way to contribute to wildlife conservation. \nEvent Objectives: \n– Promote community connection with eucalypts by raising awareness of their role in providing hollows essential for biodiversity.\n– Highlight the impact of eucalypts on Queensland’s wildlife\, particularly gliders\, owls\, and parrots.\n– Engage participants in conservation action by building nest boxes to support species affected by habitat loss.\n– Encourage advocacy for the protection of hollow-bearing trees\, aligning with Wildlife Queensland’s campaign to protect ‘hero trees’ and strengthen habitat conservation policies. \nEvent Structure: \n1. Educational Talk:\n– Expert-led discussion on the significance of hollow-bearing eucalypts for gliders and other wildlife.\n– Overview of Wildlife Queensland’s eDNA research to identify species reliant on hollows.\n– Explanation of the ‘hero tree’ concept and advocacy for improved tree protection policies. \n2. Nest Box Workshop:\n– Hands-on session where participants build nest boxes for possoms/gliders/small parrots. Guidance on placement and monitoring of nest boxes to ensure effectiveness. \n3. Community Engagement & Take-Home Resources:\n– Participants will leave with practical knowledge on eucalypt conservation and wildlife-friendly practices.\n– Information on how to support Wildlife Queensland’s ongoing conservation efforts. \nWhy This Event Matters: \nThe loss of hollow-bearing trees threatens the survival of many species\, including gliders\, powerful owls\, and parrots. This event will empower the community to take an active role in protecting these vital habitats and ensure that future generations of wildlife can continue to rely on eucalypts for shelter. By blending education\, hands-on conservation\, and advocacy\, Wildlife Queensland’s National Eucalypt Day event aims to make a meaningful contribution to eucalypt conservation and community engagement. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hollow-havens-protecting-eucalypt-homes-for-wildlife-tickets-1285483940069 \n
